Podcasts
▪ Podcasting is a method of distributing multimedia files (such as audio programs or music videos) over the Internet, using either the RSS or Atom syndication format, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.
▪ The term "podcast" can refer to both the content and the method of delivery.
▪ The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.
▪ While podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of files, a unique feature of podcasts is that they can be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading RSS or Atom feeds. The term podcasting comes from "iPod" and "broadcasting".
Podcasts are similar to internet radio broadcasts. The benefits of using podcasts include:
▪ They can be enhanced with text and images in the background.
▪ Using PC or Mac computers and iPods, podcasts can be downloaded and listened to in any location, at any time, as many times as the user would like.
▪ Podcasts can allow students, alumni, faculty, etc. to access their University’s digital content (e.g., class lectures, public lecture, news updates) and stay connected to the university. Once students are subscribed, podcast playlists can be updated automatically whenever the podcast directory is updated.
▪ Recording podcasts is relatively easy and inexpensive. No high-tech computers needed as audio editing is not processor intensive. Free programs can be downloaded (e.g., Audacity).
