I wanted to learn more about Google Publish, but when I searched for that, Google came back that they are changing Page Creator to Google Sites which will allow permission management. It will also allow users to include video and presentations, which is something I need for a couple of marketing classes where I teach part-time. Google Sites allows you to embed spreadsheets, documents, and presentations as well as create blogs and calendars. This greatly reminds me of a pbwiki page in setup, except Google Sites allows the addition of announcements. The difference is in the aesthetic look after it’s completed. The Google Sites really looks like a website (hence, Google Site), where (to me) the pbwiki page does not.
I viewed the sample education page and my first thought was that it will take a lot of time to maintain. Being a college instructor, I already have many responsibilities that take time. So, my thought, is that I can scale the Google Site page (if I do this) to fit my time. Also, many of my students work full-time or are in the military and take many classes at once. They, too, do not have a lot of spare time to spend updating.
Overall, I think this type of Web 2.0 would be beneficial for the students and me. It would allow the online students to upload final PowerPoint projects easier and for everyone in the class to be able to see them. I have one class that will complete a mock newspaper advertisement, billboard, and TV or radio advertisement. Google Sites would be quite helpful for these projects also because of storage capabilities as opposed to being limited by the school server.
I also checked out Google Apps for file sharing. In one class I teach (Management Principles), I use short movie clips from the publisher for the students to answer questions . The problem is that I can’t save the video from the publisher; I have to use the link to the movie in the assignment. Some students have difficulty opening the link. I’m wondering if Google Apps would help to eliminate this. I'm also wondering if this would work better for the newspaper ad, billboard, and TV/radio assignment I mentioned above.
