Dimdim - Jeff Bailie

Hi everyone,

What a great exercise!  The opportunity to collaberate on oreer reviewed applications is exactly what I need.   Thanks so much for all of your valuable reviews.

I chose to review a Voice over Internet Protocol application called Dimdim.  http://www.dimdim.com/products/what_is_dimdim.html

Please indulge me as I offer a bit of history:  My university has used VoIP applications for the past eight years.  We begain with Interwise - something of a pioneer in Web-based telephony devices, and then transitioned to Elluminate as they emerged into the market.  More recently, our system IT folks reminded us that we had a user license for Microsoft NetMeeting and it was decided that we would release the renewal of the Elluminate license to go with something that we already had on hand.  Since the "IT Weenies" weren't the ones that actually used VoIP on a routine basis, they knew note what they had done.  In hindsight, I wish that we would have stayed with Elluminate, and have continued to use the VRoom (albeit for much smaller groups).  Recently, we stumbled on Dimdim.

According to their Website, "Dimdim is a free web conferencing service where you can share your desktop, show slides, collaborate, chat, talk and broadcast via webcam with absolutely no download required to host or attend meetings.  The Dimdim Web Meeting service is available in open source, professional and commercial enterprise editions capable of supporting thousands of attendees. And unlike all other web meeting solutions, Dimdim is available in both onsite (you install it on your servers) and hosted (we install it on ours) configurations."

From a practitioners point of view, one will find Dimdim to uphold all of the standard features offered by the other VoIP applications that are out there.  But with a a free version that allows up to 20 participants, and a very reasonable fee for more (up to 100 participants for less than $2k), I have found it to be a wonderful addition to my bag of tricks.

Give it a try and see what you think.

All the best,

jeff
